05/27/2008 - Cadillac CTS: classical auto

For the first time Cadillac dealers have to complain of too small quotas. Luxury GM brand offers a direct competitor to leaders of business sedans market at much cheaper price. Earlier the difference in price was caused by excessive Cadillac's "American peculiarities": devices in miles, clumsy suspension bracket, slow "automatic machines" and motors of great volume, but low power. Times vary – CTS should not justify any more.

Design is that magic tool, which will not spoil a perfectly balanced "price-quality" car (Chevrolet Lanos is an example), but also will help, when marketing experts cannot explain strongly overestimated price (Alfa Romeo is an example).



European market is a titbit for Cadillac. But even possibility of domination in this economic territory will not force this American brand replacing design, to satisfy expectations. "Cadillac" will not correct vertical headlights and lanterns and will not bend body parts. More likely, buyers will start estimating cars in other way – when they will be allocated with excellent road performance, high level of equipment and attractive price, the epoch of classicism will be established again in automobile design.

Cadillac CTS is drawn by means of only straight lines. But when designers were explained that the car will not go too far on square wheels, so they made arches round …

If general "ex-terrier's" style has not changed, salon has undergone lots of changes, and to the best. Used materials became 10 times more qualitative, there're no any claims to assemblage.

The forward panel is sheathed by two-colour leather and seasoned by wood – in America cars finished with Carbon are also accessible. Seats have lots of electroadjustments, however, armchairs lack lateral support a little. It is especially strange, considering CTS 3.6 high dynamic potential all-wheel drive!
    
The forward panel is low – most likely not to disturb the review and create visibility of open space for those, who are sitting in front. Actually driver's space and a person to the right of him – is not a strong side of Cadillac. However, practically all basic controls are concentrated in one place and are convenient in operation.

The screen on the central console can be put forward upwards and again "hide" due to button pressing. During parking it is possible to use it as TV, but you just should switch off Parking mode, and the picture will be gone at once. Thus, Cadillac founders remind that TV watching at the wheel is dangerous.

There are command keys for onboard and routeing computers on a wheel.

Classicism is characterised by colour saturation, strict repeating lines, symmetry, clearness and correctness of geometrical shapes. What from the aforesaid is not about Cadillac CTS?

In comparison with the previous generation, Cadillac CTS became 40 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 30 mm higher, than the previous generation. Under its cowl there are motors of same volume: 2.8 and 3.6 l, but the last, 311-strong engine with direct injection, is a new one. It is the most powerful V6 which only exists in General Motors arsenal!         

The exact wheel with instant reaction makes doubting: whether electroamplifier really works under CTS cowl?! The wheel is equipped by a booster, "neutral" is felt perfectly. Chassis reacts to each degree of a wheel's turn obediently, without the slightest swings, twisting sedan in turn.

Stability and class controllability of "Cadillac" is a merit of sports suspension brackets and bracing between the top support of forward "racks". Thus, you also get enough comfort: suspension bracket's power consumption is very high and small (and even) average size holes "are swallowed" almost imperceptibly.

It is good that engine is not so powerful to "smear" passengers on a seat and bring down their breath –  we expect all this from a charged CTS-V, which will appear next year and will be equipped with mad V8. And 300-strong motor is simply "very powerful". When gas pedal passes only half of the distance meant for it, neighbours in strips already have time to move from windshield "screen" to rear-view mirrors...

At idle speed motor's whisper can be heard only in absolute silence. Only to averages the sound increases poorly and softly. But the present CTS's character shows from 4 000 to 7 000 turns. In a sports mode transmission does not allow the engine leaving maximum twisting moment's limits, switching transfer operatively and imperceptibly.

Perhaps, Cadillac is a unique brand, which suggests painting the car in white colour … for surcharge!

And nevertheless, the main Cadillac CTS's advantage is its price! The most equipped top Cadillac appears to be much more cheaper, than its base competitors in business shop. For this reason turns on a novelty are stretched for months, and German and Japanese competitors obviously miss orders...
